What is Barre? A Beginner’s Guide to a Stronger, More Balanced Body
If you’re looking for a workout that is both effective and gentle on your joints,
Barre might be exactly what you need.
Barre is a low-impact, high-intensity workout that blends elements of ballet, strength training, and functional movement.
It focuses on small, precise movements designed to deeply target specific muscle groups—such as the arms, thighs, seat, and core.
At first glance, it may look graceful and controlled. But once you experience it, you’ll truly understand what “feel the burn” means.

Why Barre Feels Different (And Why It Works)
Unlike traditional workouts that rely on large, fast movements,
Barre emphasizes precision, control, and consistency.
Through a method known as Interval Overload, your body is guided into:
• Continuous small movements that work muscles to the point of fatigue
• Repetitive, rhythm-based sequences that activate muscles deeply and effectively
• Stretching to release tension and improve flexibility
This approach helps to:
• Sculpt long, lean muscles
• Improve posture and alignment
• Build strength without placing stress on the joints
It’s not about how big the movement is—it’s about how well you control it.

Is Barre Suitable for Beginners?
Absolutely!!
Barre is designed for all levels, including complete beginners.
No dance/ballet background is required, and you don’t need to be flexible to start.
Beginning with a Beginner class allows you to:
• Learn proper form and alignment
• Understand how to engage the right muscles
• Build a strong foundation for long-term progress
It’s an opportunity to reconnect with your body in a new and mindful way.

What to Expect in Your First Class
Your first class may feel unfamiliar—but in the best way ✨
You can expect:
• Small, precise movements (smaller than you might expect)
• Muscle shaking (completely normal—and a good sign)
• A blend of strength, endurance, and stretch
• A full-body workout in every session
In addition, Barre Exercise Classes offer a variety of styles and teaching approaches, depending on each studio’s methodology.
One of the elements that makes Barre uniquely engaging is the use of music and rhythm, which helps create energy and allows movements to flow seamlessly throughout the class.
When combined with the individual teaching style of each trainer, every class becomes a distinct and dynamic experience.
In studios where trainers are highly trained and experienced, this further enhances both the enjoyment and safety of the class—allowing you to move with confidence while achieving optimal results. ✨
All of this makes attending a Barre Exercise Class more than just a workout—it becomes an experience that is both enjoyable and motivating, one that keeps you coming back.
Most importantly, you’ll leave feeling stronger, lighter, and more connected to your body.
What’s the usual range of temperature in the class?
Our studios are typically kept cool and comfortable, usually around 22–24°C (72–75°F).
Most clients find this temperature ideal for movement, but if you tend to get cold, you may want to bring a light layer for before or after class.
✨ First-time tip: Arrive 10–15 minutes early so our team can show you around the studio, answer any questions, and help you feel comfortable before class begins. We can’t wait to welcome you! 💙

4 Tips for Getting Started with Barre
If you’re new to Barre, here are a few helpful tips:
1. Focus on form over speed. Quality always comes before quantity in Barre
2. Don’t be afraid of the shake. It means your muscles are working deeply
3. Listen to your body. Rest when needed—consistency matters more than pushing too hard
4. Stay consistent. Even 2–3 classes per week can bring noticeable results

Eat before Barre
Q: Can I eat before Barre? Should I eat first? What should I eat? How long should I wait after eating till I go to class? Shall I eat right after?
A: Yes, you can absolutely eat before class—and we actually recommend it, especially if you’re attending a morning class.
A light meal or snack 1–2 hours before class usually works best. Think of something easy to digest, such as:
* A banana
* Greek yogurt
* Toast with peanut butter
* Oatmeal
* A small smoothie
Try to avoid very heavy, greasy, or large meals right before Barre class, as they may make you feel uncomfortable during movement.
After Barre class, it’s a great idea to refuel with a balanced meal that includes protein and carbohydrates to support recovery and keep your energy levels up.

Choose Barre outfit that is comfortable
Q: What kind of clothes should I wear? Top? Pants? Fabrics? Type/cut of the clothes? Accessories? Hair? Avoid Makeup?
A: Wear comfortable activewear that allows you to move freely during Barre.
We recommend:
* A fitted tank top, sports bra, or workout top
* Leggings, capris, or comfortable athletic pants
* Breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics
Since instructors often give form corrections and alignment cues, fitted clothing can help you get the most out of class.
For accessories in Barre class, less is more. We suggest removing bulky jewelry and keeping hair secured if it’s long.
Makeup is completely up to you—come to Barre as you are! Many clients prefer light or minimal makeup simply because you’ll be moving and sweating.

Barre requires no shoes
Q: Do I need a specific kind of shoes?
A: No shoes are required for Barre.
Barre classes at Physique 57 are performed in grip socks, which help provide stability and prevent slipping during class.
If you don’t have a pair yet, grip socks are available for purchase at the studio or you can grab our Ribbon Grip Socks from Wakingbee.
